Coaches, just wanted to sit down and write a short post about free throw attempts. A few things we all need to understand. 5th and 6th  grade boys and girls will shoot free throws from the high school free throw line, 15 feet. 4th grade and lower boys and girls will shoot at 12.5 feet from the basket ” This is optional for the player”. All players, excluding the shooter, inside the free throw administration area will be able to rebound a miss when the shooter RELEASES the ball. All players outside the free throw administration area, including the shooter, must wait until the ball has touched the rim. If either of the above groups violates this rule , the free throw is not counted. If the offending player is on the shooting team, then the shot will not count. If it is a 2 shot foul and it happens on the first try, it is voided and the second attempt will be allowed. If it happens on the second, the ball is dead and is awarded to the other team. If the offending player player is on the non-shooting team, then the made free throw is counted. If there is a miss, then a replacement shot would be allowed. Please teach players around the 3 point line know that they cannot cross until the ball has touched the rim. We had a lot of confusion with this last year and hope to curtail it this year before the season starts. I hope this helps, As always feel free to contact me with any questions.
